There was a viral video floating around of Snoop Dogg, being recognized and awarded his Hollywood Star that will be displayed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ha he gives his speech , he proceeds to thank himself repeatedly. This speech hit the social media hard as many others used this sound in the background of their videos highlighting their greatest achievements. As I looked further, I started to realize that while this applauds all you had to overcome to accomplish great things , where was God’s shoutout and praise? Did He not make the list?Sadly I think many of us are falling for this school of thought. “Me, me, me “or “I”. I like to call this, the illusion of “I”.
This past week, I was also watching a sermon,from my pastor,that talked about the cost of failure. This particular time he went into talking about how when we talk about our accomplishments, we tend to list off all the things that we have done. We say: “I graduated, got this job, got married, had children…… etc.. Before we know it, we are taking credit for all of the big moments that have taken place in our lives. Somehow the glory that is owed to God is stolen.
The chapter of Daniel, shows us what happens when he fall for the illusion of “I” King Nebuchadnezzar did not heed the dream that he had Daniel interpret of what was to come if he continued to take all the credit. He was forced out of the kingdom to live among like an animal. For seven years he ate grass and lived among the animals. If we are not careful, this could be us.
Here are the illusions of “I” to watch out for:
“I” is S(I)NGULAR- the belief that you are the sole reason for all of your achievements and accomplishments.
Reality: ““I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” {John 15:5 NIV}
“I” is ENT(I)TLED- the belief that you are owed and deserving of all blessings and opportunities.
Reality- “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—“{Ephesians 2:8 NIV}
“I” is SUPER(I)OR- the belief that you are in complete control and have total power.
Reality: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. {Revelation 22:13 NIV}
If you are reading this, God has blessed you and wants to bless you even more. The only thing he asks in return is ,you give him all the credit and glory for it. He will do the rest.
Thank you for reading!!
